Applications

Spyvalve supports a wide range of environmental and operational applications. Along wiht general water quality monitoring, it enables early detection of conditions that could lead to fish kills, supports conservation and protection of shellfish populations, and helps evaluate the success of habitat restoration projects.

The system is also used to assess the impacts of marine heatwaves, inform environmental flow decisions in rivers, study climate and human-driven change, evaluate shellfish reef restoration sites, and screen locations for commercial aquaculture—reducing risk and improving sustainability outcomes.

Bivalves as Natural Living Sensors:

Bivalves — mussels, oysters, scallops, and clams — are natural living sensors.
As filter feeders, they continuously “taste” the surrounding water. When conditions are healthy, their shells remain open for feeding, respiration, and waste removal. When they detect stress or contamination, they respond immediately — rejecting particles as pseudofeces or closing their shells for protection.

Conventional water-quality monitoring often misses the most critical moments. Fish kills are typically reported days after they occur, because fish sink when they die and only surface once decomposition gases form. By the time an incident is visible, the original cause is often diluted, dispersed, or impossible to trace—limiting both accountability and effective response.
